Today marks the Jewish holiday Tu B’Shevat, the New Year for trees. The YDA Jewish Caucus wanted to share some information on this little known holiday and encourage everyone to celebrate by making sure they recycle and protect the environment:)

New House Leader Is Seen at Odds With Groups on Religion and State

(Forward) The Republican leadership scramble set off by the Jack Abramoff corruption scandal has led to the selection of a new House majority leader who is at odds with most Jewish groups on most key issues of religion and state. It also has halted — at least for now — the rise of the sole Jewish Republican in the House of Representatives, Rep. Eric Cantor of Virginia.

(NY Daily News) When Peter Geffen learned that his Queens College classmate Andrew Goodman had been killed by Ku Klux Klansmen while trying to register black voters in Mississippi in 1964, he decided to join the struggle for civil rights.Goodman’s “memory had to be honored by continuing his work and not ignoring what he was doing,” said Geffen, now 59.

(Jerusalem Post) In September 2005, the Church of England’s Ethical Investment Advisory Group decided “not to recommend” disinvestment from Caterpillar Inc., the American manufacturer of giant bulldozers supplied to the Israel Defense Forces. The committee noted its decision was taken “particularly at the present time of political fluidity given Israel’s disengagement from Gaza.”
