Abdul Rahman, the Christian convert in Afghanistan who faced execution for renouncing Islam, has been released and spirited off to Italy (to avoid being killed by mobs).

(Americans United) Religious leaders in Pennsylvania should be wary of a new political organizing effort that appears to be little more than a thinly veiled push to help re-elect U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.), says Americans United for Separation of Church and State.

Details about the new drive, spearheaded by the group Let Freedom Ring, appear in today’s New York Times. The newspaper noted that a March 6 organizing event by the group featured a video appearance by Santorum but not his Democratic opponent or any other candidates. Following the presentation, organizer Colin A. Hanna praised Santorum and recommended his book It Takes a Family.

Dover schools to pay $1 million

(Philadelphia Inquirer) The York County school district defeated in the first-ever lawsuit over the teaching of intelligent design has agreed to pay $1 million to cover the plaintiffs’ attorneys’ fees in a settlement lawyers said was designed to discourage school boards from considering similar action in the future.

Court sides with church on hallucinogenic tea

(CNN) The Supreme Court ruled unanimously Tuesday that a small congregation in New Mexico may use hallucinogenic tea as part of a four-hour ritual intended to connect with God.

Justices, in their first religious freedom decision under Chief Justice John Roberts, moved decisively to keep the government out of a church’s religious practice.

Intelligent design becomes intelligent recruiting

(Harrisburg Patriot-News)Intelligent design the court case is history.

Intelligent design the advertising campaign is under way.

As enrollment season starts, two private Christian schools are advertising with the phrase that stirred a national buzz a few months ago. Harrisburg Christian School mentioned intelligent design in radio ads, while Bible Baptist School is using it in four billboards on the West Shore.

(Forward) The Republican leadership scramble set off by the Jack Abramoff corruption scandal has led to the selection of a new House majority leader who is at odds with most Jewish groups on most key issues of religion and state. It also has halted — at least for now — the rise of the sole Jewish Republican in the House of Representatives, Rep. Eric Cantor of Virginia.
